AIDS, Orphans, Poverty and the threat to security
One of the most devastating effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is the breakup of families, the creation of millions of orphans and the disintegration of social cohesion. By the end of 2000, over 12.1 million African children had lost either their mother or both parents to AIDS. This figure is set to double over the next two decade

Many studies show 20%-40% of HIV infections in African adults associated with injections (though direction of causation is unknown). These and other findings that challenge the conventional hypothesis point to the possibility that HIV transmission through unsafe medical care may be an important factor in Africa's HIV epidemic.

A Deadly Embrace: Famine and AIDS in Southern Africa It seems that the four horsemen of the apocalypse Death, War, Pestilence (disease) and Famine have come to visit Southern Africa.Millions of people are experiencing starvation or the threat of famine in Southern Africa following poor harvests across the region

HIV epidemic compounded by starvation in ZImbabwe. Mrs Emily Mudzipurwa is aged 59 and lives in Marange communal area. She says she is HIV positive. Her husband died 4 years ago. Since then Mrs Mudzipurwa has been the sole provider for her 4 children (including one orphaned grandchild) aged 6 to 15 years.

Clouded in obfuscation, confusion, ignorance, myth or reality? Demystifying the figures. Is it true that half of Botswana is infected with HIV?  Is the population of Africa shrinking as a result the AIDS epidemic? With all the wars in Africa is AIDS really the biggest killer of Africans? Is AIDS a bigger killer than Malaria?

Funding the fight against AIDS
Alongside the fight to save millions of people from AIDS, the struggles to ensure adequate funding for the fight against the epidemic goes on.

AIDS not caused by a more virulent virus
In April 2001, researchers announced that they have concluded the epidemic of HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa is not caused by a more virulent strain of the virus but is more probably due to political and socio-economic factors.
